Kindergarten for three-year-olds helps children get excited about school and learn classroom routines. Caring teachers guide learning through movement, art, music, play, and group activities.

Language and Learning

  • Develop speech and enjoy books and stories
  • Draw pictures and express ideas through art

Math and Problem Solving

  • Count objects, learn colors
  • Follow directions and make choices

Social and Emotional

  • Work and play with classmates in a kind manner
  • Try new skills

In four-year-old kindergarten, caring teachers help children have fun with skills like counting and recognizing letters. Classroom routines build good habits and children learn to recognize the feelings of others around them.

Language and Learning

  • Learn new vocabulary and read simple words
  • Express ideas and feelings through art

Math and Problem Solving

  • Count to 20 and higher; name shapes and colors
  • Pay attention for longer periods of time

Social and Emotional

  • Take turns and share; follow simple rules
  • Adapt to new people and activities; build self-esteem

K5 studentArrive in K5!

Five-year-old kindergarten prepares children for first grade and beyond. Through positive work, play, and learning, caring teachers help students take on new challenges and respect others.

Language and Learning

  • Read and listen to simple children’s books
  • Identify and print letters and know their sounds

Math and Problem Solving

  • Count to 100 and recognize numbers
  • Sort items; understand ideas like greater than and less than

Social and Emotional

  • Follow rules and ask permission
  • Show positive behavior and make good decisions

Early Education and Kindergarten Options

Many schools offer before- and after-school care for a full day of learning. All MPS students receive free breakfast and lunch. Help prepare your child for a lifetime of learning!

Kindergarten

  • K3: Limited programs are available at some schools. Children must turn 3 by September 1 to be eligible.
  • K4: Programs are widely available. Children must turn 4 by September 1 to be eligible.
  • K5: Programs are widely available. Children must turn 5 by September 1 to be eligible. Wisconsin law requires children to complete five-year-old kindergarten before entering first grade.*

Enrollment Windows: 2024-25 School Year

  • Kindergarten Enrollment:
    Saturday, February 1, 2025 to March 3, 2025
  • High School Enrollment:
    Saturday, September 28, 2024 through November 4, 2024. 
  • All other grade levels that need enrollment for Fall 2025
    February 1 to August 1, 2025
  • After the enrollment windows have closed, enrollment will reopen for fall:
    • High School: February 1 to August 1, 2025
    • Kindergarten: April 7 to August 1, 2025
