International Newcomer Center

International Newcomer Center

Milwaukee Public Schools offers a newcomer program designed for recent refugee and immigrant students with limited English-language proficiency. The program provides instruction to students in grades 5–8. Classes feature intensive English language development and cultural support in a focused academic environment. Classes are aligned to state standards.

The center is located in the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language (MACL). After two years, students continue their education at MACL or make a smooth transition to a school of their choice.

MPS has an English as a Second Language (ESL) support teacher who connects with any school where newcomer students are placed. This teacher meets with school teams to ensure ongoing resources and a successful transition for students.

Newcomer resources are available for schools with refugee and immigrant students. For information, contact Sarah Borges, ESL curriculum specialist, at borgess@milwaukee.k12.wi.us or 414-475-8732.
