Senior Checklist

MPS is committed to rigorous offerings and standards for all students. Whatever your area of interest, MPS has a pathway to success for you.

PostMilwaukee Public Schools Logosecondary education might include two- or four-year degree programs, certificates/licenses, apprenticeships, training programs — even the military. Whatever path you take, we will help you find a successful career. Use the checklist to stay on track, and be sure to ask your counselor/support or College and Career Center staff for assistance.

SENIOR Postsecondary Checklist

Fall semester

  1. Create an FSA ID and collect any information you need for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at in August.
  2. Are you enrolled in all the classes you need to meet college entrance requirements?
  3. Gather letters of recommendation — you will need these for college applications and scholarships.
  4. On/after October 1, complete the FAFSA. Many colleges have FAFSA priority deadlines.
  5. Complete the FAFSA at a College Goal Wisconsin event for the chance to win a scholarship.
  6. Make a list of college and scholarship application deadlines. (Hint: You can use your student planner to keep track!)
  7. Go on college visits.
  8. Register for the ACT if you want to retake it; register for SAT subject tests if your college requires it.
  9. Submit college applications and get help with personal statements at your College and Career Center.
  10. Find your college fit. Do your research and narrow down your choices.
  11. Sign up for summer bridge programs.

Spring semester

  1. Apply for fire cadet/police aide or other apprentice opportunities.
  2. Create student portal accounts to view admission status and updates.
  3. Look for summer employment opportunities.
  4. Check your prospective college student account for possible financial verification information.
  5. Pay your tuition deposit. Visit the CACC/counselor for options to defer/waive payment.
  6. Volunteer; complete community service hours.
  7. Apply for scholarships. Go to your College and Career Center for applications.
  8. Keep attendance and grades on track this semester. Some colleges will reverse the acceptance if you get caught in a senior slide.
  9. Compare financial aid packages with a counselor/CACC staff member/support.
  10. Take placement test; for example, Accuplacer (MATC, WCTC), UW placement test.
  11. Complete loan entrance counseling and sign master promissory note.
  12. Pay/sign housing contract fees.
