HBCU Week Banner

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) campuses foster student success by meeting the needs of first-generation and low-income students. HBCUs outperform predominantly white institutions in retention and graduating low-income African- American students. HBCU week pays tribute to their legacy of promoting equal opportunities for high-quality education.


Districtwide Activities – All Week

  • Show support for HBCUs by wearing HBCU gear and/or National Pan-Hellenic Council paraphernalia.
  • Share pictures on social media using #HBCUWeek #HBCUWeek24.
  • Seniors will attend the United Negro College Fund’s EMT College Readiness Fair on October 24, 2024.
  • Parents of students in grades 9–12 are invited to attend a parent workshop on paying for college.
  • Share HBCU facts and trivia during announcements, meetinsg, and on social media.

HBCU Door Decorating and Bulletin Board Contest

Staff will be entered into a drawing for HBCU gear.

Photo submissions are due by 4:30 p.m. on October 18, 2024.

Students can learn about scholarships, internships, and other financial resources by visiting United Negro College Fund and the Thurgood Marshall Fund websites.

All seniors should create a FAFSA ID and learn about theprocess.

Provide students an opportunity to take a gallery walk through the school where students are encouraged to build on their knowledge about HBCUs to promote higher-order thinking, interaction and cooperative learning.

MPS and United Negro College Fund’s EMT College Readiness Fair

Seniors will attend college and career readiness sessions, meet with admissions representatives, and participate in the onsite admissions process. School counselors will help eligible students register. To learn more about this special day, click here.

Students should learn about African-American Greek Letter Organizations and other organizations that support scholastic achievement and equity.
