Become a Special Education Liaison for Families (SELF) Volunteer

As a Special Education Liaison for Families (SELF), you can support families at your school who need help navigating the special education system.

Role Requirements 

To be a SELF, you must:  

  • Be a parent or guardian of a child who has an IEP or 504 plan and is currently enrolled in an MPS K–12 school
  • Be willing to participate in ongoing special education and disability information training  
  • Want to serve as a resource for other families with children receiving special education services  
  • Want to build positive relationships between schools and families 

SELF Responsibilities 

As a SELF, you will: 

  • Complete a four-session training course and attend SELF team meetings. 
  • Support families and staff members and share information about special education. 
  • Maintain confidentiality with students, parents/guardians, and educators.   
  • Improve communication and encourage partnerships between families and school staff. 
  • Work with school administration to increase family engagement. 
  • Plan activities and meetings for families and educators. 

Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a SELF

  2. If you are selected, you will receive a link to complete the required MPS Volunteer Application. 
  3. Attend four required SELF training sessions. These are held on Saturdays in either the fall or the spring. 
  4. That’s it—you're ready to start helping families!
