University Partnerships

Alverno College has partnered with MPS to offer various teacher preparation programs for initial licensure in Regular Education, Early Childhood, Special Education, Bilingual + ESL  & Secondary Content areas.

Which Program is right for you?

MPS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARA to BACHELORS AND INITIAL LICENSURE PROGRAM:     

  • Employees must have 2 current and consecutive years of employment with MPS by the end of the month for which the program begins
  • Employees must be employed as a paraprofessional in a full-time (30 hour per week or greater) benefit eligible position.
  • Employees must have a minimum of 48 college credits
  • Employees are required to complete 15-20 hours of clinical work per week in a classroom
  • Initial Teacher Licensure candidates only

MPS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHER to MASTERS AND INITIAL LICENSURE PROGRAM:

          All applicants must:

  • Be a current MPS employee
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university 
  • Employed full-time as a permit teacher, paraprofessional or Benefit Eligible Substitute teacher
  • Initial Teacher Licensure candidates only 

The programs listed below are offered to employees that have been hired on a district requested 1-year license with stipulations (permit). 
Permit teachers are required by DPI to enroll in a teacher licensure program and complete at least 6 credits in order to renew their 1-year license with stipulations. 

 **If you are serving in a Benefit Eligible Substitute or Permit Teacher position, you must be enrolled in a program that will lead to initial licensure in the area and grade of your assignment. Licensure candidates must demonstrate adequate progress (defined as earning at least 6 credits) to be eligible for renewal of their 1-year license with stipulations. 

**In addition, benefit eligible substitutes will need an official letter from the Office of Human Resources, verifying that they will be assigned to a classroom in the initial licensure area they are pursuing, for the duration of the employee’s enrollment.

  Masters with initial licensure- K-12 Cross-Categorical Special Education

License to be issued: DPI # 2801

Secondary Content licensure is NOW AVAILABLE with the Masters and initial licensure program.

Secondary content licensure programs consist of 30 credits and can be completed in 2 years. 

Any secondary content areas listed can be combined with Bilingual & ESL licenses (15 additional credits) for a total of 45 credits. 

Candidates interested in applying for secondary content licensure must have a documented undergraduate major in the same content area.

Substitutes and employees in any other job classifications who hold a bachelor's degree, can apply to open teaching positions (on Self-Service). 

Individuals that have been hired to fill a teaching position, are then eligile for the above Masters with initial licensure program that correlates to your teaching position.

  License to Masters: #2300 English Language Arts (4-12)

Credits: 30
Duration: 2 years*
License to be issued: # 2300 (allows the license holder to teach any English subject in grades 4-12)

  License to Masters: #2600 Science (4-12)

Credits: 30
Duration: 2 years*
License to be issued: # 2600 (allows the license holder to teach any Science subject in grades 4-12)

  License to Masters: #2700 Social Studies (4-12)

Credits: 30
Duration: 2 years*
License to be issued: # 2700 (allows the license holder to teach any Social Studies subject in grades 4-12)

*Length of program is dependent on upon successful course completion (on the first attempt) and continuous enrollment.

Partipants must commit to 3 years of continuous employment with MPS following the completion of the licensure program. 

**Programs are NOT eligible for financial aid or tuition reimbursment**
