Facilities and Maintenance Virtual Job Fair

We hope that the job fair is a success for both you and for us. At the fair, the focus will be on Building Operations staff.

The fair will be open from 12:00 P.M. & 5:00 P.M. on October 6, 2020.

The qualifications for each position are outlined below:

  • Building Service Helper I
  • Boiler Attendant Trainee
  • School Engineer I

Building Service Helper I     

Maintains the buildings and surrounding areas of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) clean and neat at all times.

  • Starting wage is $13.36/hour
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED

Boiler Attendant Trainee

Operates and maintains furnaces, stokers, boilers and related equipment. Oversees the work of Building Service Helpers

  • Starting salary is $36,652/year (additional experience with Boilers is considered)
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED
  • Requires an American Society of Power Engineers, Inc (ASOPE) Facility Operating Engineer’s Third-Class License
  • Requires a City of Milwaukee Stationary Engineer’s Permit to operate low-pressure boilers
  • Requires a valid driver’s license

School Engineer I

Operate the heating and ventilating plants of a school, office, or other building under the jurisdiction of MPS. Maintains stationary and equipment, care for building and grounds. Oversees the Building Operations staff.

  • Starting salary is $46,833/year (Additional experience is considered)
  • Six months experience in a supervisory or lead role OR current MPS status with no less than 6 months experience as a Boiler Attendant or Boiler Attendant Trainee.
  • American Society of Power Engineers, Inc (ASOPE) Facility Operating Engineer’s Third-Class License and City of Milwaukee Stationary Engineer’s Permit to operate low-pressure boilers
  • Pesticide certification within one year of appointment.

Testing for Facilities & Maintenance Applicants

If you have completed an application to work with Milwaukee Public Schools in one of the Building Operations positions, please indicate when you will be available for testing.  If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will be asked to come to an MPS facility to test.

  What is the application process for MPS?

• Attending the virtual job fair will ensure that you receive contact from the Talent Management department of Milwaukee Public Schools. Out Talent Management team will contact you to discuss the positions in which you have expressed interest.
• However, the best way for you to apply is to complete an application prior to viewing the available positions.  You may apply to more than one position using the same application.
• If you are a previous applicant, you may sign in using the user name and password information you created and visit the different position categories.
• If you are visiting the MPS website for the first time, you must create a user account by clicking on the New User. Once you have completed the required information, you will be redirected back to this page to select the position categories in which you are interested.
• Prior to application, you should gather electronic versions (preferably PDF) of your current resume, including updated phone number and email address.

  What is the hiring process for Milwaukee Public Schools?

All new employees, upon receipt of a job offer, will be required to undergo a background check (fingerprints included for teachers and individuals from out-of-state) and a physical which is comprised of a physical exam, a urine drug test, and a TB questionnaire.

  How long does the hiring process take?

At MPS we do our best to streamline the process. After application, you are invited to test. If you pass the test, you are placed on a hiring list in score order. Once you are contacted by the HR department, much of the process is dependent upon the actions of the applicants. Once an offer is made, MPS schedules your background check. You may not move to the next stage until you complete the first stage.

Additionally, it is critical that you contact the clinic for your physical as soon as you receive the physical notification. If all goes smoothly, we can process applicants in approximately two weeks.

  How long do I need to wait for my benefits to be effective?

The wait time for benefits if the first of the month following one month of employment. There is an option of purchasing benefits to begin on your start date. Information on that option is available at in the Benefits summary.

  What are the growth opportunities available?

There are many growth opportunities, for staff at MPS.  The opportunities within Building Operations will be discussed in detail at the Virtual Job Fair.
