This week, I take on a new responsibility that I am thrilled and humbled to accept. I wish to thank the Milwaukee Board of School Directors for putting their confidence in me to serve as superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools.
When I consider the many facets of this responsibility, I am keenly aware that I answer to many, many people—the Board of School Directors, MPS teachers and staff, families, and the community. But the group that I hold in highest regard and to whom I feel most accountable is our students. As I embark on the work of superintendent, every day I will make decisions and lead this district so that when students look me in the eye, I will be able to smile back at them with a clear conscience that I am putting them first. My work—and the work of this district—must be focused on what is best for each and every one of our 76,000 students.
Since accepting the role of interim superintendent in May, I have worked to focus the efforts of our schools on reading, writing, and mathematics, and to move our district forward using Five Priorities for Success:
- Increasing academic achievement and accountability
- Improving district and school culture
- Developing our staff
- Ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency
- Strengthening communication and collaboration
These priorities, together with our Ambitious Instruction Plan, will drive all our work and our decisions moving forward. Milwaukee Public Schools truly can be a high-performing district where all children will become their best selves. I promise to work to make this vision a reality for the young people who will be my motivation every day.
To our students, families, teachers, staff, and community—please look forward to many great things to come in MPS, and thank you for this opportunity!
