04-09-21 Ready, Set, Return to the Classroom: Welcome Back!

Dear MPS Staff,

I hope you were able to take time during spring break to relax, enjoy the weather, and connect with family and friends. Springtime is an energizing season, and I am excited to welcome staff back into district and school buildings starting Monday, April 12. This is an exhilarating time for students who are returning for in-person learning for the first time in over a year and I want to thank each of you for your hard work and dedication in supporting our students and each other during the pandemic. I know that students and families have missed in-person engagement and that we are all looking forward to being together again.

I was able to tour several buildings this week and I am thoroughly impressed with preparations. It is clear that school leaders and school teams have been hard at work putting up signage, planning out new routines, and putting great thought into how returning in-person will look for their respective communities all while keeping health and safety front and center with diligent mask wearing and physical distancing in effect. Kudos to the Department of Technology staff that have been working hard to get Chromebooks to schools for in-person learning. I also want to give a shout out to building service helpers and the Department of Facilities and Maintenance staff that are, and have been during the entire pandemic, cleaning thoroughly, ensuring buildings are well stocked with health and safety supplies, and preparing our sites with HEPA filters, plexiglass barriers, and much more. Last but certainly not least, I want to give a big thank you to our Department of Specialized Services and nursing staff who have spearheaded the district’s efforts to keep our students healthy and safe not only with regards to COVID-19 but also with everyday health needs.

Along with the excitement of returning to sites in-person, I understand that some of you may be experiencing apprehension. We are all going through a pandemic for the first time and have been experiencing a large range of emotions. I am confident that our return to in-person learning will go well because of all of our commitment to mitigation efforts and following health and safety guidelines.

If you have chosen to receive the COVID-19 vaccination, thank you! Please remember that this does not mean you are exempt from continuing to practice COVID-19 safety measures which include the following:

  • Wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose.
  • Maintain physical distancing.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
  • Monitor your health daily.

If you are interested in receiving the COVID-19 vaccination but have not made an appointment yet, there are still many opportunities for vaccination throughout Milwaukee or through your healthcare provider. Anyone age 16 and older is eligible to receive the vaccine, at no cost. A good resource for finding a vaccination appointment is HealthyMKE.

I hope you have a great weekend and a smooth return to your site on Monday!

Sincerely,

Dr. Keith P. Posley
Superintendent of Schools
