Board Governance Policies

Introduction

The Governance Policies of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors establish overall direction for the Milwaukee Public Schools. Specifically, these policies address the Board's goals, governance process, and relationships with the Superintendent and with the Director of Board Governance, and the constraints placed upon the Administration in executing Board policy. So long as the Administration operates within the general guidelines of the governance policies adopted by the Board, it may implement administrative regulations without the Board's approval, unless the Board has specifically directed that a particular regulation be given the Board’s prior approval before implementation. Only the Board, however, may adopt new policies or revise existing policies.

The Board Governance Policies are organized under four major sections, each identified by a numeric code:

•         Chapter 1.00: School District Vision, Mission, & Goals

•         Chapter 2.00: Board Governance & Operations

•         Chapter 3.00: Board/Staff Relationship

•         Chapter 4.00: Executive Limitations

Each policy within a section is further catalogued alphanumerically to give each policy its own unique identification. For example:

•         Chapter 1.00 — School District Vision, Mission, & Goals

—       BG 1.01 — Mission Statement

—       BG 1.02 — School District Goals

The purpose of the alpha prefix is to identify the policy as a Board Governance policy and not an administrative policy.
