School counselors honored across the country

Obama School CounselorsA popular coffee mug reads: “I’m a school counselor. What’s your superpower?” Ask any school counselor about their superpowers, and they will mention patience, respect, caring, negotiating, and the ability to support students through triumph and tragedy. School counselors promote success by seeing each child for his or her unique needs and taking steps to meet those needs, whether a new pair of mittens or comfort after the loss of a loved one.

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), is Feb. 4–8, 2019. It focuses public attention on the unique contributions of professional school counselors within U.S. schools in helping students achieve in school and plan for a career.

School counselors are actively engaged in working with parents to understand a child’s personal situation; in focusing on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and in working with teachers and other educators so students can realize their potential and set healthy aspirations for themselves. The training and experience of school counselors makes them an integral part of the total education program.

MPS is proud of the work being done every day by school counselors to help students achieve in school and support their personal well-being. Thank you, counselors!

During National School Counseling Week, please recognize and thank a school counselor for the important work they are doing.
