NEW DATE: Precollege PEOPLE open house at Rufus King

NEW DATE: February 27, 2019! The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence, known as PEOPLE, is opening space at Milwaukee Public Schools Rufus King Middle School in Milwaukee. Eighth-graders and their families can learn more about PEOPLE — a pathway to prepare students for college — at an open house event on Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Join us for information and tailgate food!

The grand opening will kick off expansion of the PEOPLE initiative in Milwaukee and help eighth graders learn how to apply to this college prep program. PEOPLE started 20 years ago with 66 high school students from Milwaukee. It has graduated 526 students, of which 253 attended Milwaukee Public Schools. The PEOPLE journey prepares first-generation and low-income students to be ready for college, apply for admission, and enroll at UW System institutions, with an emphasis on UW–Madison.

Upon enrollment in this program, which is available in 17 MPS high schools, each student is assigned a precollege advisor and receives support through all four years of high school. Students also get help for the college application process. Those who are accepted at UW–Madison may be eligible for a four-year tuition scholarship and support services from the PEOPLE College Scholars Program.

Families and eighth graders interested in learning more can attend the grand opening, meet Bucky Badger, and listen to one of two family sessions at the PEOPLE Milwaukee office.

Rufus King International Middle School is located at 121 E. Hadley St. in Milwaukee. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; a ribbon cutting will take place at 4:45; family sessions will be offered at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Families need to attend only one session.

To find out more, visit the PEOPLE website or watch a short video. The PEOPLE application will be open January 28 through March 11, 2019.

Students who cannot attend the event should contact their school counselor for more information.
