MPS assumes lead paint exists in any building in Milwaukee—be it a school, home, or business—that was constructed before 1978, the year lead paint was banned. As such, we monitor all MPS sites through summer readiness efforts before the start of the school year. Schools also request maintenance services as needed throughout the school year. Students, staff, and visitors should avoid disturbing painted surfaces in school buildings.

Based on the directives from the Milwaukee Health Department, the district is working to address all areas of concern regarding lead paint identified at our schools. Our Department of Facilities and Maintenance Services is contracting with a professional restoration company to expedite our work and ensure compliance with the directives from the Milwaukee Health Department.

Recently, there have been inquiries regarding the drinking water at MPS. We would like to reassure our community that drinking water sources in MPS are free from lead. Lead lateral lines leading to schools from city of Milwaukee water mains were replaced in 2016. Next, drinking fountains that had parts containing lead were shut down, and new drinking fountains with water filters were installed. Water filters are replaced regularly.

Milwaukee Public Schools is committed to ensuring the safety of every student and staff member. Our goal is to identify and address issues proactively so that our students and staff can learn and work in safe, supportive environments.

Paint

The MPS Department of Facilities and Maintenance Services has a lead-based paint compliance program within the MPS Environmental Health and Safety Manual. The program will be updated as needed.

Program as of January 2024: Section 21 - Lead-Based Paint

Facilities Master Plan Overview

2024 MPS Long-Range Facilities Master Plan

Facilities & Educational Suitability Master Plan will provide a cost effective, actionable plan to address the short- and long-term facility needs of the district. Drafting the plan will include a comprehensive analysis of education trends, school programming, capacity, building standards, operating costs and other factors. This information will be used to allocate resources and make decisions for the long-term, best interests of our students and community.
