Alternative Education #952
The Alternative Education License (#952) Program is designed to work with teachers, school districts, and community members to develop programs that help all students become successful, including those who are at-risk, vulnerable, or disengaged.
The program consists of two eight-week non-credit courses that meet every other week during the evening. Upon successful completion of the course (and portfolio submission), candidates will be endorsed by the district for the #952 alternative education license. The cost to a MPS employee is just $150 per class plus textbooks.
Initial Licensing Programs (Under Development)
4-12 MS/HS Broad Field Licenses: Math, Science
PK-12 Broad Field Licenses: Art, ESL, Music, Physical Education, World Language
The Broad Field program is designed for MPS employees with a bachelor’s degree who want to become a math, science, ESL, world language, music, art, or physical education teacher. As part of the program, participants are placed in a classroom as the teacher of record. Through weekly learning experiences (courses), candidates explore, practice, implement and reflect on best practices related to culturally responsive: classrooms, classroom management, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Coursework is designed to support candidates in implementing evidence-based strategies for immediate and equitable use in the classroom. Additionally, candidates are provided support from content area specialists, and a mentor who will support the candidate during weekly meetings.This program is pending DPI approval. Estimated length of program: 20 months.
K-9/Special Education
This program is designed for MPS employees with a bachelor’s degree who want to become an elementary or special education teacher. As part of the program, participants are placed in a K-9 general education classroom as the teacher of record. Weekly learning experiences (courses) guide candidates in exploring, practicing, implementing and reflecting on best practices related to culturally responsive: classrooms, classroom management, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Candidates will also review equitable: special education environments, identification and placement protocols, engagement of all students, as well as how to navigate individualized education programs, and federal, state, and district mandates. Coursework is designed to support candidates in implementing evidence-based strategies across multiple disciplines (language arts, math, science, social studies) for immediate and equitable use in the classroom. This program is pending DPI approval. Estimated length of program: 2.5 years.
