MPS Volunteer Application Process

Milwaukee Public Schools defines a volunteer as:

  • a non-paid individual serving under an MPS staff member.
  • an individual that provides services on an on-going basis or more than five hours a week.
  • an individual that provides services for one-time opportunities or special events.

As of November 1, 2021, volunteers serving on an on-going basis will be required to provide proof of full vaccination or be approved for a medical or religious accommodation. Follow the instructions below for the process that fits the type of volunteering you plan to do:

One-Time Volunteer Process

Who completes this process? Volunteers who serve for one-time opportunities (i.e. day fieldtrips, parent nights, school committee members etc)

  1. Complete the  Volunteer Waiver Form and submit to the supervising staff for assigned opportunity.*
  2. Participate in provided training or orientation for assignment as needed.
  3. Complete the One-Time Volunteer Hours Submission Form.

*If you have not been assigned to an opportunity, please do not complete this form. Contact the school you are interested in first to learn what options you have.

On-going Volunteer Process

Who completes this process? Volunteers who serve on a regular basis (i.e. M,T, W etc) or for more than 5 hours a week.

  1. Complete an online volunteer application and submit vaccination or the religous/medical accomodation form to the MPS COVID-19 Volunteer Vaccination Form
  2. Await approval email.
  3. Create VicNet account to access the volunteer handbook and to complete the volunteer agreement form. 
  4. Contact the school or other MPS department to confirm your volunteer assignment, start date and orientation. 
  5. Complete Volunteer Placement Form with your confirmed site and assignment at https://bit.ly/mpsvolunteerplacementform
  6. Track your volunteer hours in your VicNet account. 

Opportunities Offered at MPS

The opportunities listed below are common volunteer assignments offered at various schools across the district. Assignments are offered only to approved volunteers based on the school's need. Volunteers who are interested in special assignments must discuss that request with a parent coordinator or principal at the school they are interested in serving at.

  • Classroom Assistant (in-person & virtual)
  • Math Tutor
  • Literacy Tutor
  • Playground Monitor
  • Lunchroom Assistant
  • Library Assistant
  • Field Trip Chaperone
  • Clerical/Office Support
  • College Access Center Helper (High School Only)
  • Sports Coach
  • Special Events Assistant
