In 2011, after a 17-year career with Chase Bank, Nikole Johnson was one of many people laid off when the bank moved offices outside of Milwaukee. Nikole is a paraprofessional at Benjamin Franklin School. She loves working with students and helping them when they are struggling or not understanding something.

During a winter season about 10 years ago, MPS safety assistant Kimberly McLaughlin noticed many South Division High School students weren’t wearing coats. So she began collecting coats from parents, staff and the community. Word spread quickly that “Mama Mac” was seeking items for those in need.

Mai Xiong, a first-grade teacher at MPS’ Academy of Accelerated Learning, is Wisconsin’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year for the 2015-16 school year. State Superintendent Tony Evers personally informed Xiong of her selection during a special assembly at her school.

Pheng Lor always knew he wanted to work with children. He realized this dream nine years ago when he landed his first job as a paraprofessional with Kluge School after graduating from Lakeland College. In his role, Pheng works closely with students for whom English is a second language.

To say that Karen Delker is a fixture of the Fernwood Montessori School community would be an understatement. Delker attended the school from 4-year-old kindergarten through 8th grade – and she came back to the school in 1987 to work. She’s been there ever since.

Marquez Guzman is passionate about his work and serving the students in Milwaukee Public Schools. He started his career as a special education teacher and now serves as an MPS budget analyst. He says his role as a budget analyst is to not only ensure fiscal stability, but to help realize efficiencies so more resources can be put back in the classroom.

MPS blue runs in the veins of Joy and Ronald Adams’ family. Joy's dad, her husband and her sons are all proud MPS alums, and soon her granddaughters will be old enough to embark on their own educational journeys with MPS. The Adams family’s engagement with MPS extends beyond getting great educations. Most of the family has given back to MPS through careers in teaching as well.

It was easy for Peavy Holmes to identify the teacher who made a difference in his life. It was English teacher Ms. Burton-Powel, who taught first period in his freshman year. Peavy recalled that he began his freshman year intent on securing the role of “class clown.”

English teacher Matthew Flynn made a big impact on Maricha Harris when she attended Sarah Scott Middle School for the Health Sciences. Maricha, who is now Volunteer Service Associate for MPS, was Mr. Flynn’s English student from sixth through eighth grade.
