With fourth quarter underway, the end of the school year is approaching fast! Students should use the coming weeks to study, excel, and finish the year strong.
Did you know that 7th grade is one of the most important years in a child’s education? The reason might surprise you! A student’s 7th grade attendance, report card, and test scores will be used when applying for high school admissions in Fall 2023. In Milwaukee Public Schools, several high schools have entrance criteria for placement of applicants. In some situations, a student’s academic record determines whether they are admitted to their top-choice school.
In only seven months, families will be making important decisions about where children will attend high school. The MPS high school enrollment period takes place each year during the month of October.
Students still have time to work hard through the end of the year and strive for excellent grades. Families of 7th graders should be aware that Wisconsin Forward Exam testing will continue into April. We encourage students to do their very best on these important tests to increase their chances of being admitted to their top choice high school.
Students and families can also take steps to ensure their attendance record is up to date. When students miss school due to illness, be sure to contact the school office so the missed time is recorded correctly. Be sure to make up any school work that is missed!
Some simple strategies can also help a student boost their grades and test scores.
- Attend every class every day. High attendance can boost grades and confidence.
- Get enough sleep. Experts recommend 8 to 10 hours per night for teens.
- Finish homework and study for tests. Homework builds skills and knowledge.
