Sign up now for MPS Summer Academy, for kindergartners through high school seniors

Students take part in hands-on learning at Summer Academy.Registration is open for Summer Academy at Milwaukee Public Schools! Summer classes for students from K5 through grade 12 take place in June and July at select schools around the city.

Children in 5-year-old kindergarten to grade 8 can take part in a five-week Summer Academy exploration camp. It’s held June 24 to July 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. weekdays (closed July 4 and 5).

Through activities, special programs, and field trips, students learn arts, music, social studies, STEM, reading, mathematics, and a world language at the exploration camp. Services are available at some sites for Extended School Year (ESY, for children with special education needs), Montessori, bilingual, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Breakfast and lunch are provided, and childcare before and after programs is available through Milwaukee Recreation.

Summer Academy also helps students in grades 6 to 12 catch up or get ahead, with credit-bearing classes and accelerated learning. Dual enrollment courses are available so students can earn both high school and college credits. Summer Academy for this age group is open 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. weekdays. Offerings vary by site and session.

Summer Academy Session I, for high school students, is June 13 to July 2 (no school June 19). Session 2, for grades 7 to 12, is June 24 to July 25 (no school July 4 and 5). Breakfast and lunch are provided; Milwaukee County Transit System bus passes are provided on the first day of Summer Academy.

In addition to traditional classes in mathematics, science, reading, world cultures, and other fields, Summer Academy offers courses that are designed to tap into students' imagination and teach them new skills.  Summer Academy offers beach sports as well as traditional classes.

Some of the specialty courses for grades 1 through 12 include:

  • Beach Volleyball and Beach Flag Football

  • Cake Making

  • Certified Nursing Assistant

  • Computer Apps in Art (a digital art class)
