Students at Story Elementary School were smiling and cheering as WISN 12 and the Salvation Army delivered backpacks filled with school supplies in early September. Pens, crayons, markers, folders, paper, and more were collected throughout the Milwaukee community, sorted into colorful backpacks, and handed out to excited children. WISN 12 led the effort with its on-air Class Act drive to accept cash donations to buy school supplies.
Principal Chareese Morris expressed her gratitude for the large donation. “A donation like this makes our students feel important,” she said. “Having new school supplies and a backpack for school increases their confidence and helps them feel prepared and ready to learn.”
MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley attended the event and personally thanked the Salvation Army and Ben Lorber, director of programming and public affairs for WISN 12, for their generosity. He also shared that school supplies are accepted at any school or at MPS Central Services any time during the year since school supplies often run out and need to be replenished.
A total of 1,400 backpacks with supplies were also distributed at Banner Prep, Brown Street School, Carson, Doerfler, Goodrich, Kagel, Morse Middle School, Obama, and Sherman School.
Several Salvation Army representatives were on hand, including Major Steven Woodard and Sheree Dallas Branch, assistant divisional director of development. They distributed backpacks and made sure each student received their favorite color. Woodard summed up the event. “The needs in our community are especially high right now,” he said. “We’re so pleased that we can give students the supplies they need to succeed in school.”
On behalf of our students, thank you to the entire Milwaukee community for helping our students get off to a great start!
