Record 82 MPS schools honored for reinforcing positive behavior and supporting all students' learning needs

Up from 50 schools three years ago; MPS is home to 25% of the recognized schools in all categories recognized by the Wisconsin RtI Center

MILWAUKEE – A record-breaking 82 MPS schools are being honored by a statewide organization for reinforcing positive student behaviors, supporting all students’ learning needs – or both.

The 2015 total of 82 MPS schools recognized is up from 74 schools in 2014 and 50 schools in 2012, the first year MPS schools were recognized.

The honors are handed out by the Wisconsin RtI Center, which helps schools more effectively implement two critical programs: Response to Intervention (RtI) academics, which supports students individual needs so that all can achieve academic success and RtI behavior - Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which reinforces positive behavior to build a strong climate to help students achieve behavioral success.

MPS schools represented at least approximately 25% of the schools awarded statewide in each category.

“Strong school climates and meeting students’ individual academic needs are critical to Milwaukee Public Schools’ continued improvement in student outcomes,” MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver said. “We are honored that a growing number of our schools are being recognized for doing this work. Thank you to the students, educators and support staff both in school buildings and at MPS Central Services for making this critical work happen.”

The winners include 78 MPS schools recognized with awards of distinction or merit for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, the first of the three programs MPS implemented. Thirty-nine (39) MPS schools are being recognized with awards of distinction or merit for Response to Intervention reading and 22 MPS schools are being recognized with awards of distinction or merit for Response to Intervention mathematics.

More than 20 MPS schools were awarded in all three categories.
