English teacher Matthew Flynn made a big impact on Maricha Harris when she attended Sarah Scott Middle School for the Health Sciences. Maricha, who is now Volunteer Service Associate for MPS, was Mr. Flynn’s English student from sixth through eighth grade.
“He was the first teacher to notice and encourage my writing abilities,” said Maricha. “He was one of the teachers who was always encouraging and building up students. He was young and fun and all of the students loved him,” she said.
Mr. Flynn nominated Maricha for the National English Merit Award – and she won. She is still proud of this accomplishment and says she remembers Mr. Flynn to this day.
