February 5-9, 2024, is National School Counseling Week — be sure to thank an MPS school counselor!
Always held the first full week in February, National School Counseling Week is sponsored by the American School Counselor Association. The 2024 theme is “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.”
“I want to say to each school counselor from Milwaukee Public Schools that your tireless efforts in fostering resilience among our students, especially in challenging times, have not gone unnoticed,” said Ophelia King, Manager II of School Counseling at Milwaukee Public Schools. “Whether it’s providing emotional support, guiding career exploration, facilitating academic planning, or advocating for the diverse needs of our students, your unwavering commitment to their well-being is truly commendable.”
King noted that school counselors also serve as “mentors, advocates and champions for our students, empowering them to navigate obstacles and pursue their passions.”
School counselors guide students in academics and career planning throughout the school year, and they also counsel students in social and emotional development, and they help them prepare to be lifelong learners, productive workers, and responsible members of society. School counselors not only offer support; they also help to prepare the foundation for students, in school and in life.
While school counselors work one on one with students, they also work in tandem with MPS parents and collaborate with teachers and other school staff to provide a nurturing environment where children can fulfill their potential.
MPS is grateful to its school counselors for their hard work and for their dedication to the children of Milwaukee Public Schools. Thank you, school counselors!
