Mark your calendars for driver education this fall

Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation offer driver education programs in the summer, fall, and winter/spring seasons. This is a certified program to help students receive their temporary permits.

Multiple options are available, including MPS Drive (for age-eligible MPS students only) and Community-Based Driver Education (for all age-eligible community members). Please see below for additional details regarding each program.

Fall 2022 Registration


Register online for MPS Drive or Community-Based Driver Education.

Space will fill very quickly; be prepared to register as soon as possible once registration opens.

  • City of Milwaukee residents & MPS Students: Registration will open on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m.
  • Non-residents: Registration will open on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m.

Students can participate in MPS Drive & Community-Based Driver Education courses in multiple ways: in-person, online, or hybrid (a mix of in-person and online). Click here to learn more about each available.

Driver Education Participant

MPS Drive

All MPS students between the ages of 15 and 17.5 can sign up for MPS Drive, a program that features classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel lessons.

Registration for MPS Drive opens on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. While MPS has added slots to the MPS Drive program beginning this year, space will fill very quickly; be prepared to register as soon as possible once registration opens.

Students Must Be:

Currently enrolled in an MPS school

At least 15 years old by the beginning of class start date and not older than 17.5 by the last day of class

All MPS students are already in the system for MPS Drive. Click here to find step-by-step MPS Drive registration instructions. To access your account:

  • Username - Enter the MPS student ID number as the Username (numbers only)
  • Password - the MPS student's last name (the first letter is capitalized, ex: Smith)

Community-Based Driver Education

Community-Based Driver Education is open to all eligible students: residents, non-residents, MPS students, and non-MPS students.

Students Must Be:

At least 15 years by the class start date and not older than 17.5 by the last day of class

Fee: To register, students must pay a $150 (city of Milwaukee resident) or $275 (non-city of Milwaukee resident) fee, which covers the cost of the classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons.
