November 11-15, 2024, is National School Psychology Week, a time to acknowledge and show appreciation for school psychologists in Milwaukee Public Schools and in districts throughout the country.
This year’s theme, “Spark Discovery,” is meant to evoke a sense of pride in school psychologists’ scientist-practitioner training. School psychologists support their communities in exploring connections and pursuing new ideas.
School psychologists work with families, teachers, school administrators, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen the connections of home, school, and community.
They apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed socially, behaviorally, emotionally, and academically. By participating in National School Psychology Week, MPS joins with other districts across the U.S. in committing to celebrate the important role of school psychologists in America’s school communities.
“I would like us to remember the profound impact that positive, supportive relationships have in fostering growth and transformation,” said Peter Faustino, PhD, President of the National Association of School Psychologists. “The power of meaningful connections kindles curiosity, inspires learning, and sparks the discovery of new possibilities in our schools and communities.”
The 170 school psychologists in Milwaukee Public Schools help students at all grade levels to succeed academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. They collaborate with school staff, parents, community agencies, and other professionals to help create healthy and supportive learning environments. School psychologists also help to strengthen the home-school-community connection for all students.
The high quality of School Psychological Services at Milwaukee Public Schools has earned national recognition. The National Association of School Psychologists this year awarded the program and staff members the status of proficient (the second highest rating) through its Excellence in School Psychological Services program. MPS was one of only four districts across the country to receive the designation and the only one in Wisconsin.
