It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! MPS’s big celebration takes place on October 12

Hayes Bilingual students were among the MPS students in the UMOS Mexican Independence Day Parade on Sunday, September 15, 2024.September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month! It’s a time to celebrate the Hispanic American community, its history, achievements, and contributions to the United States — from cultural to economic to scientific and beyond.

MPS’s largest event in observance of the month, the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, will take place on Saturday, October 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

All are invited to the free celebration, which will take place at South Division, 1515 W. Lapham Blvd.

This year’s theme is “La música que nos une” (The Music That Unites Us). Many MPS schools will share cultural and educational displays followed by student performances of music and dance selections. In addition, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Steel Pan Band will perform at about 11:45 a.m., and Milwaukee Recreation will have free activities for children.

Events celebrating Hispanic heritage will take place at schools around the district, including one on October 31 at South Division High School, which has one of the state’s largest secondary bilingual programs.

At Milwaukee Public Schools, students can learn about Hispanic culture all year, including at the district’s Spanish immersion school and bilingual dual language schools, as well as through the World Languages program and other courses.

Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15, although some schools' observances are taking place after Hispanic Heritage Month officially ends.
