On Veterans Day, the United States honors all American veterans of all wars. To every man and woman who has served in the armed forces—thank you for your service! We also appreciate the sacrifices and support made by the spouses, children, and families of those who serve.
In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day—the anniversary of the 1918 ceasefire that would eventually signal the end of World War I in June, 1919. Armistice Day later became Veterans Day, and has gone through changes over the decades, but now is celebrated as a national holiday every year on November 11.
Today, thank a veteran! Call or text someone you know, post on social media, or look for ways to donate to or support a veteran’s organization. Remember that our forces include the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard.
For more information about the holiday, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Day page. A Teacher Resource Guide is available on this site.
