For summer reading, check out MPS Reads book lists!

What’s a good way to keep children busy over the summer? Reading! Sharing books together as a family or curling up with an exciting story can help keep reading skills and vocabulary sharp over the summer. Students who read in their free time are shown to be better readers, have a larger vocabulary, score higher on tests, and have greater content knowledge.

Starms kids with booksSummer slide is a real concern for children at all grade levels. Research shows that students can lose as much as a full month of learning over the summer. Students who read even six books over the summer months are shown to maintain their skills rather than losing their learning before school starts in fall.

MPS Reads offers monthly lists of recommended books for all ages on a broad range of multicultural topics that are meaningful for students. Many titles are free for MPS students through the Sora app at https://soraapp.com/library/milwaukeewi/collections

To view past and upcoming monthly lists of recommended books, visit the MPS Reads web page.

The Milwaukee Public Library is offering its Super Reader summer reading program again this summer. Visit https://www.mpl.org/summerreading/ to learn more. Children, teens, and adults can sign up. Libraries are also offering fun, free activities all summer long to keep families reading. Sign up soon!
