Milwaukee Public Schools is committed to keeping all students and staff safe during the school day. The district has procedures for visitors to schools and for students who need to be released early from school to attend appointments.
Every MPS school has procedures to make sure only persons with a valid purpose are entering buildings.
All visitors must:
- Use the designated main entrance and clearly identify yourself.
- Report to the office/security desk.
- Show a form of identification.
- Sign in on the MPS Visitor Record.
- Wear/display the MPS Visitor Pass at all times while in the school.
- Be escorted to the requested location.
- Return the Visitor Pass to the office/security desk and sign out.
- Visitors are limited to TWO per student for meetings, conferences, and classroom visits unless approved by the building administrator or designee.
Early Release
Students are expected to be in school for the full day. When appointments must take place on a school day, the following procedures must be followed.
For Parents/Guardians of Students in Grades K–8
- Please check with your child’s school about early release procedures and follow all steps.
- Update your emergency contacts as needed to make sure anyone authorized to pick up your child is listed.
- On the day before or the morning of an appointment, call the school office. Please tell them what time you will pick up your child and the purpose of the absence.
- Enter the building to pick up your child.
- Have your ID with you.
- School staff will check your ID and have you sign out your child.
Please note that schools cannot release children without a parent/guardian or approved person present to pick them up. This is for the safety of students. We want to ensure that only authorized persons are picking up children from school.
For Students in Grades 9–12
If high school students must leave school for an appointment, they must follow early dismissal procedures.
- Go to the school attendance office.
- Give the reason for early release and sign out.
- Obtain an early release pass showing that they have permission to leave the building.
These procedures have been designed to keep students and schools safe. We appreciate the cooperation of all students, families, and visitors.
