Engleburg students receive gift of new coats from Bucks’ Middleton and UnitedHealthcare

An Engleburg student tries on a winter coat.Hundreds of new winter coats awaited students at MPS’s Engleburg School on Monday, December 2, a gift to them from Milwaukee Bucks star forward Khris Middleton and UnitedHealthcare.

Each of the more than 300 students who were in the school gymnasium for the event with the Bucks player could pick out their favorite coat to take home, with UnitedHealthcare volunteers and other adults helping them find the right size.

Engleburg students gave a warm welcome to their visitors, who included Middleton; representatives from UnitedHealthcare, which is his partner in his 12 Days of Khrismas giving events; MPS Interim Superintendent Eduardo Galván; and District 1 Director Marva Herndon, the president of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors.

Students are in 4-year-old kindergarten through 5th grade at Engleburg School, 5100 N. 91st St. A UnitedHealthcare volunteer helps a student find a coat.

Middleton and UnitedHealthcare visit an MPS school every December. The event had a new twist this year: UnitedHealthcare donated a “hygiene locker” to the school, in support of an MPS initiative aimed at ensuring all children have access to such items. The locker is stocked with toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, cleaning wipes, and other personal items.

The items, United Healthcare said, “can make a significant difference in a student's day-to-day life, helping them to focus better during class and participate more fully in school and social activities.”

Middleton takes part in a dozen acts of service annually in December, in Wisconsin, Louisiana, and his home state of South Carolina.
