City Year volunteers beautify Carson Academy

City Year MLK Day of Service - Carson Academy of ScienceIn honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Dr. Benjamin Carson Academy of Science was visited by about 300 volunteers on January 16. While students enjoyed a day off, City Year organized volunteers to paint and beautify the school so students could return to bright, inspiring spaces. Throughout the day, volunteers painted murals, built and painted shelves, and took on other beautification projects.

For a number of years, City Year has organized a day of service to make schools more inviting. City Year places student success coaches in schools to serve as tutors, mentors, and role models who increase student achievement.

Visitors were welcomed by Carson Academy Principal Erika Minzlaff and included Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Milwaukee Board of School Directors Member Sequanna Taylor, MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley, City Year Executive Director Dr. Stephanie Maney-Hartlaub, andformer Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes.

On behalf of Carson students, staff, and families, thank you for your wonderful work!
