J-Term: What you need to know

The June Term, or J-Term, provides several weeks of learning after the end of the traditional school year and before the beginning of Summer Academy.

5things families need to know about j-term

  • Students will have more time to learn, resulting in more students graduating on time, fewer students repeating grades or classes, and more time for students to prepare for tests, including those that result in college credit.
  • The new calendar, with J-Term and Summer Academy, provides a safe learning environment for students in kindergarten through high school 12 months a year. This also means families have fewer days where child care would be needed.
  • Transportation will be provided for the regular school year — August through May — and for J-Term.
  • This effort supports MPS C.A.R.E.S. in providing secure places for students during non-school hours.
  • Students can reinforce basic skills or take enrichment classes in J-Term and Summer Academy.

* Families with previously scheduled vacation plans for August 2017 would have absences excused with a note from a parent/guardian. Students would be responsible for making up missed classwork.

5 things staff needs to know about j-term

We can leverage more resources for classrooms by creating operational efficiencies in payroll, professional development and transportation.

  • The new calendar has five days of professional development before students arrive in August — two more than the current school calendar.
  • There will be more voluntary opportunities for teachers and staff to earn income by working J-Term and Summer Academy.
  • The district has the ability to secure additional funding from the state to fund additional instructional days and transportation.
  • There will be additional time before 3rd Friday to stabilize and maximize student enrollment.

** Staff who can document previously scheduled and pre-paid for August vacations can use miscellaneous time to compensate for the lost days.

5things the community needs to know about j-term

  • J-Term and Summer Academy will provide a safe learning environment for students 12 months a year.
  • Students will have more time to learn, resulting in more students graduating on time, fewer students repeating grades or classes, and more time for students to prepare for tests, including those that result in college credit.
  • Operating efficiencies would allow the district to focus more resources in classrooms.
  • Partner organizations will have additional time to mentor students within a structured school environment and students will have a clearly defined internship/service period.
  • High school students would end school in May, making it easier to fill summer job openings.
