Kindergarten Pathway

Kindergarten for three-year-olds helps children get excited about school and learn classroom routines. Caring teachers guide learning through movement, art, music, play, and group activities.

Language and Learning

  • Follow directions and make choices

In four-year-old kindergarten, caring teachers help children have fun with skills like counting and recognizing letters. Classroom routines build good habits and children learn to recognize the feelings of others around them.

Language and Learning

  • Learn new vocabulary and read simple words
  • Express ideas and feelings through art

Math and Problem Solving

  • Count to 20 and higher; name shapes and colors
  • Pay attention for longer periods of time

Social and Emotional

  • Take turns and share; follow simple rules
  • Adapt to new people and activities; build self-esteem

K5 studentArrive in K5!

Five-year-old kindergarten prepares children for first grade and beyond. Through positive work, play, and learning, caring teachers help students take on new challenges and respect others.

Language and Learning

  • Read and listen to simple children’s books
  • Identify and print letters and know their sounds

Math and Problem Solving

  • Count to 100 and recognize numbers
  • Sort items; understand ideas like greater than and less than

Social and Emotional

  • Follow rules and ask permission
  • Show positive behavior and make good decisions

Early Education and Kindergarten Options

Many schools offer before- and after-school care for a full day of learning. All MPS students receive free breakfast and lunch. Help prepare your child for a lifetime of learning!

Head Start

Head Start helps ensure children are ready for school through half- and full-day programs for three-year-olds and full-day programs for four-year- olds. Head Start is federally funded and acceptance is based on income limits. Head Start enrolls all year. Visit the Head Start office at Lee Learning Center, 921 W. Meinecke Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53206, or call (414) 252-0350.

Kindergarten

  • K3: Limited programs are available at some schools. Children must turn 3 by September 1 to be eligible.
  • K4: Programs are widely available. Children must turn 4 by September 1 to be eligible.
  • K5: Programs are widely available. Children must turn 5 by September 1 to be eligible. Wisconsin law requires children to complete five-year-old kindergarten before entering first grade.*

How to Enroll

  • Visit the MPS district website and enroll online at mpsmke.com/enroll
  • Enroll in person at any MPS school.
  • Visit the District Enrollment Center which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Enrollment Dates

  • Immediate Enrollment (2017-18 school year) -- now through June 2018
  • Kindergarten Enrollment (2018-19 school year) -- February 3 - March 4, 2018
  • Fall Registration (2018-19 school year) -- January 29 - August 1, 2018
  • J-Term (June 4-29, 2018) -- starting March 1, 2018
  • Summer School (July 2-27, 2018) -- starting March 1, 2018
  • Middle/High School Early Admissions (2019-20 school year) -- Enrollment Dates TBD
