Restorative Practice - Community-Building through Beautification

Humboldt Park muralsNinth graders in Mr. Beyer's restorative practices class at Bay View Middle and High School used the design cycle process and community-building skills, along with art skills and social studies concepts, to strengthen relationships with Bay View–area residents and beautify the park they all enjoy.

Early in the school year, students invited leaders in the Bay View neighborhood to join them in a community-building circle to talk about the value of public spaces in general and of Humboldt Park in particular. Participants shared their own personal park stories.

Out of this conversation came a number of service projects that were carried out over the school year, including a clean-up, artwork, permanent signs, fence decorations, and "elf doors" at the bottom of large trees.
