Newcomer programs are specifically designed for recent immigrant students with limited English-language proficiency. The programs provide intensive instruction in a special academic environment.
The International Newcomer Center in the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language provides intensive English language development and cultural support to newly arrived refugee and immigrant students in grades 5-9 in their first year in MPS schools, allowing students to then make a smooth transition to their community school or school of choice.
Classes are aligned to state standards with intense focus on the language and culture required for high school success. After two years, students may choose to attend a school in their attendance area or one of the citywide secondary programs, or they may continue at MACL.
The Bilingual Multicultural Education immigrant support teacher (IST) works to support schools where newcomer students have been placed. The IST visits schools to meet with ESL teachers or administration to provide extensive support and resources. A Newcomer Toolkit is also available to assist sites with their newcomers.
