MPS Community Service Coordinator Kathleen End took first place at Startup Weekend Milwaukee 2013 with her idea to connect students and other with volunteer opportunities.

Her business idea, Sproutr, helps connect users with meaningful volunteer experiences and allows them to track their progress toward service hour goals while competing with others to earn service hours.

“Winning to me means that when Sproutr becomes a reality, more students will be connected to volunteer opportunities that provide learning outside of the classroom that in return reinforces the importance of learning that happens inside the classroom,” said Kathleen. “My goal as an educator is to develop lifelong learners, positive citizens, and future leaders.”

More than 100 people pitched their ideas during the Startup Milwaukee event last weekend. Startup Milwaukee is part of a national organization that selects with promising startup ideas and provides them opportunities that include training, mentoring and funding.
