No one in Wisconsin could have guessed the enormous surprise that awaited Wisconsin teachers in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week. Wisconsin’s own philanthropist, former senator, and MPS alumnus Herb Kohl made the dreams of hundreds of teachers come true! Senator Kohl is generously matching the donations pledged toward every project posted by a Wisconsin teacher on the fundraising website Donors Choose. His generosity is pouring $500,000 into schools across the state, and will fuel other donations that will result in $1 million directly reaching classrooms.
Milwaukee Public Schools got another special surprise only a few days later. Herb Kohl Philanthropies announced that it will generously fund a trip to Washington, D.C. for 400 ninth graders! This new program, supported by the MPS Foundation, will be expanded over the coming years until all ninth grade students have the opportunity to visit our nation’s capital and experience some of our most significant historic sites and museums.
Thank you, Senator Kohl! Your donation will bring a flood of books, art supplies, technology and specialty items to our students. It’s exciting that teachers who have a vision for their classrooms are receiving funding for projects that are near and dear to them. And thank you for making it possible for 400 students to experience the trip of a lifetime by visiting Washington, D.C. Wisconsin is so very fortunate that Herb Kohl Philanthropies has made education a key focus. Scholarships and other education support provided through this foundation are truly making a difference in the lives of Wisconsin students.
The recent donation via Donors Choose is the second time Senator Kohl has honored our teachers in this way though his generosity; in September 2016, to jumpstart the new school year, he funded more than 1,000 projects in more than 400 schools across the state.
What a thrilling way to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week! I look forward to seeing the many projects that will come to life in Milwaukee Public Schools thanks to this incredible show of support for our teachers, and I look forward to hearing the stories of students who travel to Washington, D.C.
