Dear Milwaukee Public Schools families,
In light of the recent tragedy in Florida, I want to assert our belief that schools are so much more than educational institutions; they are a fabric in our community, and we will do everything we can to keep our students safe. Our hearts go out to the children and families in Broward County.
Our commitment to the safety of our students goes beyond providing them with safe and secure learning environments. This time last year, our district declared that we would be a safe place for all students and families, regardless of their immigration status or native language, by passing the Safe Haven Resolution. Today, we have an opportunity to again show our commitment to all students by supporting legislation that enables Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) eligible children, youth and young adults to remain safely in our country, in our community and a part of our MPS family.
We welcome and are committed to ensuring the equitable and fair treatment of all students and families, including individuals of all ethnicities, religions, cultural backgrounds, immigration status, and sexual orientation or identity.
MPS will be sending the attached letter to the offices of Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson, urging them to take action to preserve the protections necessary for our students and their families.
Please consider joining us in supporting and protecting members of our MPS family by taking action today, and sending your own message to the senators’ offices.
