Houston flooding

As chair of the board of directors of the Council of the Great City Schools, I am asking our MPS and Milwaukee communities to consider ways to help young people in the Houston Independent School District (HISD).

Just as Wisconsin residents have generously provided school supplies and warm clothing to MPS students in need, let’s now help Houston in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

We are collecting school uniforms (all sizes and in new or clean/gently used condition) and basic school supplies between now and Wednesday, September 6. I want to encourage each school community and each central district location to conduct an emergency drive. Central Services will serve as the main collection area and will take the lead on shipping all of the collected items. Schools and individuals can drop items off with our security staff at the front or back entrance of Central Services. For more information, please see the following link: Help for Houston

Thank you for your care and concern for the Houston Independent School District.

There are two other ways you can help students in Houston.

1. HISD has an immediate need for children’s clothes of all sizes (clean and in reasonably good repair) and school supplies. All clothes and school supplies may be sent to:

HISD Harvey Recovery
c/o Delmar Stadium
2020 Mangum
Houston, TX 77092

2. The HISD Foundation has set up a special fund to provide assistance to their students and families. Click here to read more about their effort and make an online donation.

Let’s keep the families of Houston in our thoughts over the coming weeks and reach out when we can to help the city rebuild.
