We must act now because our children cannot wait

To reach our goals of success for every child, our students need more time to catch up, maintain progress or accelerate their learning. This year, we are proposing starting all high schools and year-round schools in August to allow more time for instruction. This is urgent because too many of our students are still falling behind. With this change, they will have more time to catch up and get the help they need to succeed.

MPS alumna performs at National Tree Lighting Ceremony

I am always proud to hear the success stories of MPS alumni. Last week, we learned of an MPS graduate who is in the national spotlight, and the news truly fills my heart. The National Tree Lighting Ceremony is an annual celebration in Washington, D.C., during which the president officially lights the holiday tree in front of the White House. This year, the nationally televised event featured Kelly Clarkson, James Taylor and Marc Anthony. I am proud to share that the entertainment lineup also included Myesha Henderson, an alumna of Milwaukee High School of the Arts!

As we celebrate American Education Week across the nation, I am reminded that one of the strengths of our educational system is the diversity of our students and staff. Diversity reflects the fundamental values of public education in that we proudly educate and value all students. Each of us uniquely represents the many cultures that have contributed to our global society.

Signs of progress in MPS

Our efforts are yielding results: MPS no longer is in the lowest performing category on the Wisconsin School Report Card. We will not stop until every child is successful. This is our promise to our students, families and the community. Fulfilling this promise will take the best effort of every one of us. Every teacher in our classrooms. Every leader in our schools. Every partner in our community. Every family member and every student. We will make that effort every day.

Dr. Darienne Driver is Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. 

As Superintendent, Dr. Driver works with the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and district leadership to improve student achievement; engage in effective and efficient operations that make best use of district resources; and, develop opportunities to increase parental and community involvement.
