MPS singers eye national talent show

Turnaround Arts Talent Show is set for March 2018In March, 2018, Turnaround Arts students from across the country will gather in Washington, D.C., to perform in a national showcase of talent. MPS has been invited to send a group of students to perform. Fundraising is now underway so 12 talented middle schoolers can take part in this once-in-a-lifetime event that will be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The first step toward Washington, D.C., began with the composition of an original musical piece. Ja’Rahn Leveston, a teacher from Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts, created and submitted an original piece called “200” in celebration of the 200th birthday of Frederick Douglass. The song is written in the style of the hit musical Hamilton.

Having received the exciting news that the piece was accepted into the talent show, auditions are now underway to select three students from each of the four MPS Turnaround Arts schools – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. African American Immersion School, Lancaster, Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts, and Sherman Multicultural Arts. Students will rehearse in January and February, and will perform the piece locally to celebrate Black History Month.

Help our students realize their dream! The cost for each student’s travel and lodging is $800, and the full cost for 12 students and 4 chaperones is $12,800. Our students need all costs for the trip covered by March 1, 2018.

Donate now! Visit the MPS Foundation website and click the “Make a Gift Now” button, then select Turnaround Arts at the bottom of the dropdown menu so your entire donation will go directly toward this trip.

Turnaround Arts was initiated by the Obama Administration and provides arts support in high-need schools. It offers innovative arts, dance, theater and music programs; arts integration across subject areas; arts resources; musical instruments; and high-profile artist mentors. Turnaround Arts has improved attendance, math scores, and reading scores, and has decreased suspensions across participating schools nationwide.
